Gloves Not Guns is a boxing club run by a man named Albert Brewer that is located in the Arkansas Delta in the city of Pine Bluff with a goal of giving the youth in the area a positive alternative to gun violence and crime. Pine Bluff is a city that is known as one of the most dangerous cities not only in the state but in the entire United States. Despite his efforts, there have been multiple former members of his boxing club that have lost their life either to murder or to prison sentences. Albert and his local grassroots team are doing very important work in a struggling community. I talked with Albert about the problems the youth faces in the city and wrote about it in a Substack post.
